Dear Reader,
About two months ago, I learned that a long-time friend had died, unexpectedly and it seems, rather tragically. I want to take a moment now, as I think about him, to acknowledge what he meant to me.
Paul, you were a shining star in my line-up of friends. I cannot say enough what a difference you made in my life. Here's a glimpse at why: when I first arrived in the 'big city' of Washington, DC over twenty years ago, with little material wealth to my name, you opened your home to me while I pounded the pavement looking for work and friendships in my new 'home'. You invited me along on social gatherings (that very memorable Super Bowl party where I met my wonderful husband!) and even helped me to get my first 'real' job. From there, things only got better. As you know, I moved away to live overseas with my husband, but our trips home each year were marked by wonderful reunions in your home, usually with another 20 or so of your friends in attendance! That's the kind of person you were, Paul (and Trish, your wonderful wife, is the same). You brought people together, loved talking about ideas, and seemed to really enjoy opening your home and your heart to others. I can honestly say that you were my first friend in Washington and that meeting and knowing you really changed my life. Thank you, Paul. I really miss you, especially now as I think about returning to the USA and realize that you are no longer there. You will always live in my memory. May you be well, wherever you are. With love and appreciation, your friend, Melissa |
