You Made a Difference Print
Dear Miss Ditty,

Hello. How are you? I am not sure if you will remember me as it has been many, many years but I was a student of yours in the first and fourth grade. I certainly remember you and the impact you had on my life.

I have always been a person who felt the need to thank those around me. I have done that most of my life with family and friends but have always had a few names of special people in my head whom I have not yet thanked. You are on the top of that list. I feel it is important to tell people what they have meant to your life and I appreciate the opportunity to do that now to you.

I remember the first grade well, and the joy of being in your class. You taught me to work hard; you taught me fairness; and you taught me with a slight smack to my bottom to keep quiet at the appropriate times. I am still working on that one.

My family moved half way through my fourth grade year in your class and the move was very difficult for me. To this day, I treasure the lovely poem you wrote to my sister and me as a going away gift. The cover was pink with a flower and included many special, caring thoughts. I still have it. I cannot tell you how much that poem meant to me and the fact that a busy teacher would take the time out of her life to personally make me such a gift. I have never forgotten your incredible kindness and, in fact, repeated it twice in my own life.

You should know I became a teacher. I taught for 10 years before being blessed with three beautiful daughters and staying home with them. During my teaching years, as well as with my daughters, I have tried to repeat the lessons I have been taught by both you and my family: fairness, kindness, and hard work. On two occasions, I had special students move away and I wrote them similar poems to the one you had written me years before.

I wanted to write and tell you that I am grateful for the lessons you taught me and for your loving, generous nature. Not only did your kindness and thoughtfulness touch the life of a fourth grade girl but eventually other lives through me as well and I thought you should know.

Thank you Miss Ditty.

Sincerely and With Love,
Michelle
